Word & Sacrament:

Ancient Practices for Modern Church Planting

Coming May 1, 2023

While much of church planting today is approached as a new, innovative effort, church leaders can take comfort in the truth that they are simply stewards of what the faithful church has been doing for millennia. By rediscovering the foundations of our Christian heritage, we are able to plant healthy, faithful, and more missionaly effective churches. Written from an Anglican perspective but accessible and applicable to churches of all traditions, Word and Sacrament explores the relevance of ancient church practices such as liturgy and sacraments on the contemporary work of church planting.

Current Catalogue

All of my boards are handmade with domestic and exotic hardwoods. No stains or dyes are used; all colors are the natural colors of the wood. All finishes are natural and food- safe. As an Anglican priest, I also pray during the crafting of each board for the person who will receive it and all who will share in their hospitality. The prayer is free.

#CHR1 Wenge Stripes

$50

9 x 8.5 x 1 wenge, maple, yellow heart

Wenge is a beautiful African wood with black and deep mocha swirls. Yellow heart is a very dense South American wood. This board marries the two along with the lighter stripes of North American maple. This smaller, almost square board is great gift for anyone- especially a Steelers fan!

SOLD

#CHR4 Long Walnut Charcuterie

SOLD

#CHR5 Amorphous Pin Stripes

$50

19.5 x 6 x .75 cherry, walnut, padauk, maple, wenge

A lot of sanding and shaping went into this board to give it a

smooth flowing feel that reminds me of a polished river stone.

Tailored pin stripes of increasing width slide through the

beautiful cherry grain.

SOLD

#CHR6 Live-Edge Board

$55

23 x 7 x 1 cherry, padauk, walnut, maple

This board has an added feature of a section of live-edge cherry. Live-edge is the outside of the tree and includes some of the lighter sapwood. The bark is removed but the natural character is retained. It adds a very unique rustic look.

Cutting Boards

#CB1 Checkered End-Grain Board

$125

14 x 10.5 x 1.5 maple & walnut

End grain boards orient the grain vertically. I do not make many of end grain boards as they require multiple additional steps. Some people prefer end grain boards and feel they are easier on knives. This board has a checkered pattern and chamfered profile.

#CB2 Striped Board Featuring Purple Heart

$95

17 x 12 x 1 walnut, padauk, maple, purple heart

This board features wide stripes of purple heart surrounded by maple, flanked by the orange of padauk, and grounded by dark walnut. It is a handsome board!

SOLD

#CB3 Strawberry Blond Board

$150

18 x 12 x 1.75 cherry, maple, bloodwood, yellow heart

This thick and solid board features a golden look

with alternating stripes of cherry and maple with a

center of yellow heart with a pop of color in

bloodwood. Beveled edges make it easy to pick up.

It is a golden beauty!

#CB4 Multi-striped Board

$95

16 x 12 x 1 cherry, purple heart, walnut,

bloodwood, maple

This action-packed board has stripes of many colors

symmetrically arranged around a central maple

board. The beautifully figured cherry wings add even

more movement to this active board. It is thinner to

allow it to be lighter but still sturdy. Rubber feet

included.

SOLD

#CB5 Thick Bold-striped Board

$150

17 x 12 x 1.75 walnut, maple, cherry, purple heart

I love this board. I almost kept it for myself. The

beautiful figuring of the cherry stripes follows down

the lines of this thick board. The walnut is rich and

dark. The splash of color in the little bit of purple

heart and maple make this board bold and

beautiful.

SOLD

#CB6 Shaded Walnut Board

$95

16 x 12 x 1 walnut, padauk, maple

There is a lot of movement in this cutting board.

Largely crafted from a single walnut board to

feature the beautiful variations in the wood- rich

darkness of the heartwood and lighter hues of the

sapwood. The center is highlighted by a highly

figured padauk center with a bright maple stripe.

Rubber feet included.

SOLD

#CB7 Darker Walnut Board

$95

16 x 12 x 1 walnut, padauk, maple

This board is the twin of #CB6, but made without

the lighter sapwood for a more uniform color.

With rubber feet.

SOLD

#CB8 Cherry and Walnut Board

$95

18 x 12 x 1 walnut, cherry, padauk, maple

The edges of this thinner board are made from

some of the deepest walnut I’ve come across. The

dark walnut frames the beautifully figured cherry

and bright padauk and maple. Fitted with rubber

feet.

SOLD

#CB9 Beach Cottage Board

$95

19.25 x 12 x 1 maple and cherry

This board is light in multiple ways. It is light in

color through the simplicity of maple and cherry. It

is a thinner board so it is lighter in weight as well.

It provides a great deal of cutting space, however

as it is one of the longest boards in my catalogue.

Perfect for a beach house! Fitted with rubber feet.

#CB10 Sapele & Wenge Board

$150

20.25 x 12 x 1.5 maple and cherry

The picture does not do this board justice. Made

from sapele- an African wood resembling

mahogany- along with African wenge and a bold

stripe of padauk highlighted by pinstripes of

maple, this board is a stunner!

#CB11 Sapele & Maple Board

$150

20.25 x 12 x 1.5 maple and cherry

The fraternal twin sister of #CB10, this board

reverses the light and dark stripes of maple and

wenge.

SOLD

#CB12 Three Classics Board

$95

16 x 12 x 1.5 maple, cherry, and walnut

This is a classic board made from three beautiful

North American classic wood species. The bold

stripes proportionally decrease in size, giving this

board a sense of intentional design. Thick and

solid, this board will fit in any kitchen. Fitted with

rubber feet.

16 x 12 x 1.5 maple, cherry, and walnut

The identical twin of #CB12 but without rubber

bloodwood, golden cherry, and white maple. This

board reminds me of a sunset. The edges are

chamfered and it is fitted with rubber feet.

"In nothing has the Church so lost Her hold on reality as in Her failure to understand and respect the secular vocation. She has allowed work and religion to become separate departments, and is astonished to find that, as a result, the secular work of the world is turned to purely selfish and destructive ends, and that the greater part of the world’s intelligent workers have become irreligious, or at least, uninterested in religion.

But is it astonishing? How can anyone remain interested in a religion which seems to have no concern with nine-tenths of his life? The church’s approach to an intelligent carpenter is usually confined to exhorting him not to be drunk and disorderly in his leisure hours, and to come to church on Sundays. What the church should be telling him is this: that the very first demand that his religion makes upon him is that he should make good tables.

Church by all means, and decent forms of amusement, certainly—but what use is all that if in the very center of his life and occupation he is insulting God with bad carpentry?

No crooked table legs or ill-fitting drawers ever, I dare swear, came out of the carpenter’s shop at Nazareth. Nor, if they did, could anyone believe that they were made by the same hand that made Heaven and earth. No piety in the worker will compensate for work that is not true to itself; for any work that is untrue to its own technique is a living lie."
